History

We are 80,000 early learning and care professionals–family child care providers, Head Start teachers, child care center teachers, and after-school workers—members of SEIU. We unite early educators in CA, CT, DC, FL, IL, LA, MA, MD, MI, NJ, NY, OH, OR, RI, TX, WA, WV, and Puerto Rico.

We first began to organize in the 1990’s through SEIU Local 925, formed by members of 9to5, the working women’s organization. We united Head Start workers in Ohio and Massachusetts and child care center workers in Seattle.

Since then thousands of Head Start early learning and care professionals, assistants, and family child care providers joined together across the country to advocate for their profession and the children they care for.

We are working to gain recognition for our profession so that young children can realize their full potential and enter school able to continue to learn and grow.
